March 2008 Newsletter
I do not usually write a newsletter every month; however, we have so much going on in March that we need to start making plans…SPRING is just around the corner!
On February 16 and 28 we had very productive Volunteer Meetings. The next meeting has been scheduled for March 18. Everyone is excited to get started making improvements to our town! We planned a clean up date for March 1; however, the weather forecast delayed that activity. Following is a new schedule for several projects….weather permitting. Please join us!
Projects for Anawalt and Surrounding Communities
NEW Litter Clean-up Date - MARCH 15 - From top of Peeled Chestnut Mountain to Maybeury. Anawalt Volunteers will meet on top of the mountain at 9:00 am….OR come out whatever time you can make it… there is plenty to do! Bring a bag lunch!
Wildflowers will be planted along the mountain roadway! Bring your tools and any bulbs or seeds you would like to share! Contact a member of the A.L.L. Club, (Anawalt, Leckie, Little Creek) or Town Hall @ 383-2993 for more information. Delmar Winebarger and Danny Saddler heads up this project. We need a group to clean up Elkhorn Mountain and Jenkinjones #8 Mountain. ALL Citizens are asked to join us in cleaning up these areas and our communities
Community Vegetable Garden - We need some experts in gardening! We are inviting our young people come out and learn how to grow a garden. Suggested sites - a section of the Campground, Basket Ball Court, or on the property used for the Nueva Ana Mobile Home Park - what do YOU think?
Karaoke - Danny Saddler and Pat Price have offered their time to provide Karaoke once a month. First date will be Saturday, MARCH 29 @ 1:00 pm, in the park or community room, depending on the weather. Come out and enjoy!
Community Easter Egg Hunt will start on March 15 and last until EASTER - EVERYONE welcome to search for the eggs, which will be hidden in different locations throughout the area. The 1st clue will be posted on March 15. The Eggs will contain instructions on how to claim your prize.
Children’s Easter Egg Hunt - Saturday, March 15 @ 12:00 in the TOWN PARK - We have many small Bunnies that were donated by the Kimball Veterans and Visitors Center; however, we still need Large Bunnies, Chicks, and Easter Baskets for the children and adult prizes for the community Egg Hunt. Donations appreciated.
While getting ready for Easter activities, let us not forget the reason for Easter!
Easter holiday, is a celebration of the resurrection of Christ!
Jesus Christ, The Son of God, bled and died for us in a sacrifice.
All of life's beauty, The Lord created, for us all to share.
Spring breezes begin to flow, sending fragrances through the air.
Let's be grateful for the LORD, let's rejoice and sing.
If it wasn't for the Lord, we wouldn't have anything!
IF inclement weather prevents the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt on the 15th, it will be rescheduled for March 22 @ 12:00.
Community Dinner - Friday, March 21 and Saturday 22 at 7 pm sponsored by Denton Community Baptist and Archdale Faith Baptist Mission from North Carolina. EVERYONE WELCOME! This mission group will be here early on Friday to visit in our area. Local Church pastors and church volunteers are asked to come out and offer your support in helping this group get to know our community and local needs of our citizens. They plan to be here once a month.
Needs - We have been asked what some of our needs are. Tell us yours? Your name will be kept confidential if you have a need but would rather it not be known, except by those who can help. As always, we cannot promise that every wish will be met; however, there are Resources we can contact.
Water Shed - Let us clean up our Streams, starting at the Headwaters of Jenkinjones and Leckie. Please do your part to help, by not throwing garbage in the creek, and cleaning up areas that joins your property. Take a picture “before” and “after” and you may win a prize for the most improved area. We are in the process of obtaining bags and gloves for this project. Please do not put the roadside or creek bank litter in the Town’s garbage. The State will haul this “Litter” off for us. Trout Unlimited helps the Elkhorn Water Shed with their yearly clean up and we plan to contact them for assistance. Other organizations will also be contacted.
Recently there was a meeting with the Solid Waste Authority Board, Commissioner Urps, Magistrates, D&R, Police Officers, Town and County Officials, discussing ways to clean up our Towns and our County. Many good suggestions came out of this meeting and everyone there offered support. If we clean up our communities, our mountainsides and creeks, there will be more opportunity for tourism and more interest in people relocating here. Everyone agreed that old dilapidated buildings throughout the area need to be torn down; junk and abandoned vehicles need to be hauled off, and areas that have become eyesores need to be cleaned up. The next meeting will be March 6 @ 6:00 in the Commission Building. Join us for your input.
Do not forget…Hands of Hope Mission have a bag lunch program for children, the elderly and shut-ins. Lunches are delivered on Saturday. Call Ray Gilley at 383-2418 for more information. The Thrift Shop has great items to choose from at very low prizes. Volunteers are needed!
D.O.G. Mission - Based in Pageton offer many community services such as help with homework, movie night, game night, Bible Study, and a food program. They just received a new hockey table game for game night. They are giving away Prom Dresses so call 383-HELP for additional information.
Food is given away at the Anawalt Fire Department monthly. They welcome volunteers to help with the food service, fire fighting, traffic control during accidents, and other emergencies. If you would like to be a firefighter, call 383-2400 to find out what training you need. The Town assisted the Fire Department in applying for a Grant for $5,000 several months ago. The request was for equipment. I am happy to announce they have received that check.
There is interest in reorganizing our Neighbor Hood Watch Program.
Library/Teen Center - We need to decide where we want to go with this project. Is there an interest? If so, let us know. If not, we need to decide how to use this area.
The Emergency Center is necessary in case of another flood or any other disaster that could come along; however, we can use this space for other activities as well. Arnita Moore is in charge of this project and can be reached at Town Hall.
Renovations - Our Community Room needs some attention. Ceilings in the bathroom need to be repaired and sink cabinets need to be purchased or built; the floors need to be sanded and the doors need to be painted.
Adopt a Spot - Choose an area of town you would like to adopt. This would involve keeping that area tidy, and planting flowers or whatever you would like to do to YOUR spot. Plaques will be installed in the area adopted with your name.
Sidewalks - We have several areas that still need to be replaced.
A Stage needs to be built for outside activities.
AS YOU CAN SEE, WE HAVE MUCH TO DO! All projects of interest will be discussed at the next Volunteer meeting on March 18. Much Good is Happening in Anawalt - Come and be part of it! VOLUNTEER
The Town of Anawalt has committed to following State laws and rules concerning flood protection for our citizens. The Town adopted an ordinance suggested by the State concerning building improvements, structures within our town, floatable items being placed in the flood zone, and many other aspects to keep another flood from doing the damage we saw in 2001. Please contact Town Hall or The Redevelopment Authority in Welch before making any changes to your property to see if this ordinance is being followed and to get the necessary permits.
We are happy to announce that EVERYONE is now back on our Spring Source of Water located on property we leased from Pocahontas Land Company after the 2001 flood. Upgrades have been successful thanks to Small Cities Block Grant Funding. You can help us conserve water by letting us know if you see water on or around your property that could be from a leak. We appreciate your patience and understanding over the past few months!
God Bless,
Mayor Eva Sue Rash
