February 2008 Winter Newsletter
I hope each of you have had a joyous and blessed winter and are looking for great things to happen in 2008!
The Christmas Holidays kept our staff and volunteers busy.
Once again, we held our Christmas Parade and Party during the week so students of the Anawalt Elementary School could participate. Mrs. Owens, the school principal and her staff helped transform the children into angels who seemed to be visiting from heaven; many were dressed as Christmas Packages, walking and singing with messages of “love” and “peace”
The Anawalt Fire Department brought Santa to Town with the aid of representatives from the Bramwell and Gary Fire Departments!
After the parade, many tiny tots were treated to a party in the community room and presents given to them by Santa! Roger Miller once again made a great Santa Clause!
The Christmas Party was continued at the Anawalt Elementary School where students were treated with refreshments and presents. Santa Clause joined Staff and Volunteers from the Town of Anawalt and Parents, Teachers, and Foster Grandparents from the Anawalt Elementary School to make this a special day for all! A very big Thank You to EVERYONE! More important, let us never forget to THANK GOD for CHRIST who was OUR FIRST GIFT. It is because of HIM that we celebrate Christmas…HIS Birthday.
Anawalt Employees and Volunteers delivered treats and gifts to Senior Citizens. Jo Ann Moore and Dorothy Montgomery took presents to the Elkhorn Head Start Students and the remaining gifts were delivered to area children before Christmas. We had several calls from outside our area about children in need and gifts were taken to them as well. Every year our support system grows and because of these wonderful organizations, many children had a Very Merry Christmas! Gifts were donated by Hands of Hope Mission, The Kimball Veterans Center, Christian groups from Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and local residents. Thank You!

On Going Projects: Many projects still need to be completed. We would love to know what is important to YOU. What would you like to see happening in our town? On Saturday, February 16 at 10 a.m., there will be a Town Council Meeting; a Community Volunteer Meeting will follow at 11:30. If you are interested in moving our Town forward, please attend the 11:00 meeting…as always, EVERYONE is welcome to attend the Council Meeting at 10:00. We value your opinions and suggestions.
We would like to organize a youth group to help with community issues. If you are a young person who is interested in improving your community, please come to the 11:00 meeting on Saturday and let your voice be heard! This meeting will be for the improvement of ALL communities surrounding and including Anawalt. What activities and programs are important to YOU?
Needs of Community Organizations: Hands of Hope could use more volunteers for their food delivery program on Saturday and for the Thrift Shop. Ray and Linda Gilley head up this program.
D.O.G Ministries from Pageton have several programs such as Game Night on Friday at 6:00 p.m.; Bible Study on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. If interested in volunteering or participating call 383-HELP.
We are planning to re-organize our Neighborhood Watch due to the many sad situations that has happened in this area during the last few weeks. Volunteers are needed to help with patrols and phone calls. A contact from each street or area is needed. If interested call or come to the volunteer meeting. If you wish to participate but do not want it made public, please call me at Town Hall 383-2993 or at my home 383-2460 after 6:00 p.m. for more information
The A.L.L. Club (Anawalt, Leckie, Little Creek) will soon be making plans to pick up litter for the spring clean up. If you wish to help, sign up at the community meeting, call Town Hall or contact Delmar Winebarger who heads up this program.
Thanks to Jack Heffinger for his continued effort to keep our Town free of roadside litter and cigarette butts! Jack asked that you please not empty your Cigarette Butts on the side of the road or in parking lots. On a recent walk with him, he pointed out several places that need some attention. If one of these areas is near your home, he would appreciate your help in cleaning it up.
Water Update - We still have several areas on the #12 Water; however, we are planning to have everyone back on the spring water soon if all goes well. We are grateful to Pocahontas Land Company for allowing us to lease the property where this water is located.
We have two Wells at #12. The #1 Well we are using has a lot of sulfur, which gives the water an unpleasant odor. The #2 Well, which is available and ready to use at the pump house contains much iron. We discussed this with many of our customers who said they would rather have the sulfur smell than the iron, which could damage white clothing. We regret the inconvenience this has been for our customers. I am sure we all agree that we will be happy when we go back to the wonderful spring water that is located on property we leased from the Pocahontas Land Company. I appreciate your patience and understanding during the past weeks!
New Employees - Welcome to Frank Wycoff our newest Police Officer. He came with high recommendations and I believe he will be an asset to our town. Claude Perry has taken over the Garbage Pick-up. I believe Claude will make sure this service is handled on time and do a great job for our customers. We regret that the garbage truck was broken down last week and your garbage could not be picked up on time. Thanks to Tim Corner for getting the compactor patched back together once again! J We are trying to find a way to obtain another truck to keep interruptions to a minimum. Purchasing one is difficult on our limited budget.
Winter Weather! Remember to keep your emergency kit stocked with items such as extra water, food, medicine, candles, flashlights, and batteries during the cold winter weather. Make sure to have an alternative heating source. Stay Safe.
I am looking forward to a beautiful spring season in which “together” we can continue to make our town the best it can be!
